VISIT THE CARNAC ALIGNMENTS (10KM AWAY)

The menhir alignments at Carnac are one of the most important prehistoric sites in the region.
The site features almost four thousand stones, erected by our distant ancestors over 6,500 years ago.
Not everything is known about this vast megalithic complex.

No specialist in the world can say, for example, what these stones and their layout meant to the men who assembled them.
Even today, we can only put forward the most likely hypotheses.

How do you explain this perfect alignment of Stones?

Brittany’s menhirs retain some of their mystery. Several hypotheses attempt to provide more or less plausible explanations for their significance. For some researchers, these stones form a gigantic agricultural calendar, while others see them as religious monuments, individual or collective burials, a tribute to an astral body such as the moon…

With so much mystery still to be solved, it’s hardly surprising that the Breton megalithic site is the stuff of legends, some claiming that Roman soldiers of yore were transformed into stone!

How and when can you visit the Alignements de Carnac?

Free tours

Visitors can access the site free of charge between October and March. The site is not open to pets, with the exception of guide dogs.

If you come by car, you can park in the Ménec or Kermario parking lots. Then take one of the many footpaths leading from the Maison des Mégalithes to the site.

Paid tours

Access to the site is subject to a fee between April and September, the aim being to protect it from the risk of overcrowding by tourists. If you plan to travel during this period, remember to book your ticket as early as possible, preferably several weeks in advance, especially if you’re coming in summer.

In any case, the one-hour tour organized by the Centre des Musées Nationaux will give you the opportunity to learn more about the history of these menhirs and dolmens.

On the day, at least one hour before your visit, drop in at the Maison des Mégalithes, an information point and exhibition space where workshops, exhibitions and other cultural events are regularly held.

Or opt for an audio-guided tour on board the “Petit train touristique des alignements” or the “Carnac Visio Tour” coach.
It’s also possible to explore the site in a horse-drawn carriage or on a gyro-pod – the latter offered by Mobilboard Carnac.
